Iran: What Options are Left for the US?

Last Wednesday, WFPG hosted a Beyond the Headlines Series program with Atlantic Council Senior Fellow Barbara Slavin to discuss the options left for the US in Iran. Ms. Slavin made the case for containment, highlighting the problems with preemptive military action against Iran and instead advocating for a well-tailored regime of sanctions toward the country.

2012 Annual NY Mentoring Fair

On February 22nd, WFPG held its annual NY Mentoring Fair at New York University. Over 180 students and young professionals attended the fair representing several universities, including New York University, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and The New School. The Fair gave participants an opportunity to speak with accomplished professionals in such fields as the United Nations, peace and security, international law, international business, international development, and the US Foreign Service.

On February 6th, WFPG held its annual DC Mentoring Fair at The George Washington University. Over 175 students and young professionals attended the fair representing several universities, including George Washington, Georgetown, American, UMD, Johns Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania, and William & Mary. The Fair gave participants an opportunity to speak with accomplished professionals in such fields as the Department of State, national security and defense, international business, international development, and the United Nations.  On January 27th, author Ann Lee discussed her book What the US Can Learn From China at Demos in New York, moderated by Patricia Ellis of WFPG. In her opening remarks Ms. Lee provided an overview of the areas in which China has excelled, focusing on the notions of meritocracy, strategic planning and economic reform, while acknowledging that there are still areas for improvement, primarily relating to public relations and communications. According to Ms. Lee, relations between China and the United States are going relatively well, though there are definite areas in which the relationship could improve, especially regarding public opinion.

The US and Egypt: Between Islamists and Generals

 On January 20th, WFPG hosted a Beyond the Headlines Series program on The US and Egypt: Between Islamists and Generals, with Michele Dunne of the Atlantic Council. Dunne, who addressed the WFPG immediately after the events in Tahrir Square one year ago, returned to offer new insights on Egypt's current political climate. Her remarks covered the healthy political developments in Egypt, the relatively unhealthy actions of the military leadership, and the uncomfortable situation in which this puts the United States.

 On January 13th, Refugees International advocate Lynn Yoshikawa briefed WFPG on the recent political reforms in Burma and the impact on the humanitarian situation in the country. Recently returned from Burma, Yoshikawa shared her first-hand experience and covered the situation facing refugees, internally displaced persons, and ethnic minorities, as well as the impact of recent political changes on relations with the US and countries in the region.
