Washington, DC—On December 7, 2012 WFPG co-sponsored a Non-Profit and Government Career Expo with George Washington University, New York University, and the University of Pennsylvania. The Expo provided students the opportunity to explore internships and jobs with representatives of government agencies and non-profit organizations. The event also included opening remarks by Kathleen Doherty, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, as well as a panel on “Careers in International Affairs: Pathways and Opportunities” with Shari Bryan of National Democratic Institute, Sarah Craven of the United Nations Population Fund, Cindy Dyer of Vital Voices, and moderator Dawn Calabia, a WFPG Board member.

The panel addressed issues facing students and young professionals about whether or not to attend graduate or law school, networking strategies, balancing family life and work, and practical work experience. During the Q&A, the panelists were asked about the Foreign Service Officer Test, the values of domestic versus international experience, the financial strains of higher education, and the importance of strong writing skills.
