At this year's luncheon, Ambassador Rice will address members and guests on "Major National Security Challenges Facing the US" at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. Ambassador Susan Rice assumed the position of National Security Advisor on July 1, 2013. Prior to this appointment she served for four years as U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Kimberly Marten, specialist on international security and Russia, with brief WFPG and IIE on "Russia and Ukraine: Past, Present, and Future" on May 19th. Marten is the Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Political Science at Barnard College, Columbia University, and the Deputy Director for Development at Columbia's Harriman Institute for Russian, Eurasian, and East European Studies (where she served as Acting Director, 2012-13). In addition to Russia, her research topics include corruption and international security, warlordism around the world, and militias and security sector reform.

WFPG will host a reception and program with Ambassador Ramón Gil-Casares on June 19, 2014. Ambassador Gil-Casares was appointed Ambassador to the United States on April 13, 2011. He is a former Director of the Department for International Affairs and Defense and in July 2002 was named Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in the government of former Prime Minister José Maria Aznar. As a member of the Spanish Foreign Service he has served in Equatorial Guinea, Uruguay and in the Spanish Consulates of Manila, New York and the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation in Madrid.

Afkhami noted that this year’s meeting focused on the evaluation of the MDGs, and that the subsequent agreement was a positive step forward. Negroponte provided an overview of Chavismo and the sustainability of these policies under President Maduro. Kristina Koch, Chief of Recruitment Section of the UN Department of Field Support/Field Personnel Division, and Catherine Sung, Project Manager of the UN Talent Pipeline Initiative, briefed WFPG members and guests on the UN's new initiative designed to recruit qualified women for director-level positions in UN Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions. The talent pipeline, open to senior-level women managers in international affairs, builds a pool of qualified candidates and broadens access to women with diverse skill sets to fill capacity gaps. WFPG held its annual DC and NY Mentoring Fairs at George Washington University and New York University. Over 150 students and young professionals attended each fair, representing area universities including George Washington, Georgetown, American, Johns Hopkins, New York University, Columbia University, Princeton University, Cornell University, and many others. The Fairs gave participants an opportunity to speak with accomplished professionals in such fields as the Department of State, international business, think tanks, international development, and the UN.
