Join us for a briefing on the situation in Libya with New York Times Pentagon correspondent Elisabeth Bumiller. She has been covering the American military's role in Libya, the debate in Washington over arming the rebels, and the view at the Pentagon about engaging in a third war in a Muslim country. She has been on two recent trips with the Secretary of Defense to the region: Bahrain in March, and Saudi Arabia and the UAE in April. Since January she has also traveled with him to Iraq, Afghanistan, China, Japan, Korea, Germany and NATO headquarters in Brussels. View invitation and register

 Author Gayle Tzemach Lemmon spoke to the Women's Foreign Policy Group on her new book The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe. The book tells the story of Kamela Sadiqi, who, desperate to support her brothers and sisters and unable to earn a living outside the home during the Taliban rule, started a dressmaking business in her living room which offered work to 100 women in her community. On February 22nd, Michele Dunne, Senior Associate of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Editor of Arab Reform Bulletin, briefed WFPG on the revolution in Egypt and the democratic uprisings throughout the Middle East. Dunne outlined the socioeconomic and political conditions which laid the foundations for revolution: the youth bulge, increased access to information through internet and social media, and the concentration of political power in the hands of an individual who is not “accountable via the ballot box.” Photos | Transcript | C-SPAN

2011 Annual NY Mentoring Fair

 On March 3rd, the Women's Foreign Policy Group held its annual NY Mentoring Fair at  New York University. The event was attended by over 150 students and young professionals. Students benefitted from the extensive experiences and expertise of mentors across international relations fields such as the foreign service, international law, business, international development, peace and security, and the United Nations.
