Co-sponsored by the Institute of International Education

New York, NY—On April 28, 2017, WFPG co-hosted a discussion on "The Crisis in Syria: Aspirations and Challenges for the Next Generation" with the Institute of International Education. Syrian communications specialist and 2017 Atlas Corps Fellow Abeer Pamuk shared insights from her experience working with SOS Children's Villages in Syria and in the region, as well as the stories of her colleagues, friends, and family still in Syria. The discussion covered obstacles including the widespread violence and lack of access to education, as well as examples of the resilience of the Syrian people and Pamuk's hopes for the future of her country. Nele Feldmann of IIE opened the program with remarks on IIE's Platform for Education in Emergencies Response (PEER), an online resource which enables displaced Syrian students to connect with opportunities to continue their higher education. The discussion was moderated by Kim Kahnhauser Freeman of the Women's Foreign Policy Group.
