We’ll delve into "The Barefoot Woman," by Scholastique Mukasonga, a highly decorated French-Rwandan author and recipient of the 2021 Simone de Beauvoir Prize for women's freedom. The Barefoot Woman is Mukasonga’s tribute to her mother, Stefania, a victim of the Rwandan genocide. Through recollections of everyday life, it portrays Stefania as a devoted protector and guardian of tradition amid the systematic displacement of her people, and recounts the violence and horrors with which she was faced. "The Barefoot Woman is a living-record document, the voice of culture, tradition, and hope as well as a representation of the history lived by a group of Tutsi during the Rwandan genocide. It is a great performance where language has the stage, where words are revered and carefully chosen." — World Literature Today Enjoy a relaxed evening alongside WFPG members with guided discussion, meaningful conversation, and light refreshments.
