Jill AbramsonJoin us for a special luncheon discussion on News Coverage of Foreign Affairs and National Security with Jill Abramson, the first female executive editor of The New York Times, and Elisabeth Bumiller, New York Times Deputy Washington Bureau Chief.

As executive editor, Ms. Abramson serves in the highest ranking position in The New York Times’ newsroom and oversees their news report in all its forms. Previously, she served as managing editor and helped supervise the coverage of two wars, four national elections, hurricanes, and oil spills. Ms. Abramson has also served as The Times' Washington bureau chief and as deputy bureau chief and an investigative reporter for The Wall Street Journal.

Karen Elliott House Karen Elliott House, former publisher of The Wall Street Journal, spoke with WFPG about her recent book On Saudi Arabia: Its People, Past, Religion, Fault Lines—And Future. She discussed the political, economic, cultural, and foreign policy dimensions and challenges facing Saudi Arabia today including their role in the region, the impact of the Arab Spring, the role of women and youth, and the prospects for future stability. The event was moderated and hosted by WFPG Board Member Diana Villiers Negroponte in DC and co-sponsored by IIE in NY.

altAmbassador Abdallah Baali of Algeria addressed WFPG at an Embassy Series event on US-Algerian Relations. The Ambassador spoke about the political and religious conflicts in the region, discussing the situations in Mali, Libya, and Syria, and describing the role of Algeria in security and humanitarian aid efforts. He also addressed the recent attack on civilians at the gas facility in Algeria, which resulted in dozens of civilian deaths, including three Americans.

Afghanistan After 2014:
The Impact of Troop Withdrawal on Democracy, Stability, and Women's Rights

altFawzia Koofi joined WFPG at a luncheon and program on Afghanistan After 2014. Koofi talked about the impact of next year's US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan on democracy, stability, and women's rights in the country. She discussed the advancements women have made since 2001, such as higher rates of education and increased participation in politics, as well as how precarious those basic rights will be after the 2014 withdrawal. Koofi spoke about how important the 2014 elections in Afghanistan are for ensuring a stable political and military transition, and why she is running for the presidency.

Over 140 students and young professionals attended the fair representing several universities including New York University, Columbia University, The City College of New York, Barnard College, Vassar College, University of Pennsylvania, and many others. The Fair gave participants an opportunity to speak with accomplished professionals in such fields as the Foreign Service, international business, think tanks, international development, and the UN. Photos

 



2013 Annual DC Mentoring Fair

altThe WFPG held its annual DC Mentoring Fair at George Washington University, marking the eighth year the WFPG has hosted a mentoring fair in Washington, DC, and the fourth year that we were hosted by GW. Over 175 students and young professionals attended the fair representing several universities including George Washington, Georgetown, American, George Mason, UMD, Johns Hopkins, Catholic, VCU, and Mary Washington. The Fair gave participants an opportunity to speak with accomplished professionals in such fields as the Department of State, international business, think tanks, international development, and the UN.  Photos
